The Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Program is designed to help you understand and manage symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder and helps you to learn how to change the unhelpful thoughts and beliefs maintaining PTSD. It can also teach you useful distraction and relaxation techniques, and ways to reduce stress or physical symptoms.
This program is based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and has been developed by psychologists and researchers from the National eTherapy Centre.
What to Expect?
The PTSD Online program has 12 modules that you can do in your own time and have access to for 12 months. It provides information about PTSD and helps you to understand why it develops. PTSD Online also introduces the skills and strategies that can help you to:
- Identify the symptoms of PTSD
- Learn relaxation techniques including progressive muscle relaxation
- Gain control of physical reactions
- Learn how to change any unhelpful thoughts and beliefs maintaining PTSD
- Plan to maintain your mental health gains after the course
How do I use the PTSD program?
You can enrol in the PTSD program after signing up for an account with Mental Health Online.
You can work through the PTSD program by yourself or with support from one of our therapists. You can use the program in a flexible way, in your own time, and in a way that fits into your week. To get the most out of the program, we recommend committing a few hours a week to learn from the program materials and to practice the skills and strategies they introduce.
Considering therapist support?
If you reside in Australia, you can also sign up to our free Therapist Assist option to access 12 weeks of support from our therapists while you use the program.
If you choose this option you will talk with one of our therapists over the phone before beginning your program. During your program you will receive weekly email support from your therapist. You will also have the option of adding up to four live sessions with your therapist via our secure video and chat platform.
Is this program right for me?
The PTSD program may be most helpful for people who experience mild to moderate PTSD. It has been created for people who are:
- Over the age of 18 years
- Australian residents
You can also complete our online mental health assessment called the e-PASS which will make recommendations about the program that might be right for you.
If you experience severe PTSD, or complex PTSD, you may like to talk to your GP or mental health professional about whether the PTSD program is right for you.
How do I get started?
Making changes to support our mental health can be challenging and it takes time. We recommend putting aside a few hours each week to read about and work on the skills in the PTSD program.
